Deze mag je niet missen! De Shift Talks Keynote 2022 is het hoofd-event van Shift Talks Festival 2022! In het World Skate Center houdt Masha Gessen diens keynote speech. Met als onderwerp het opnieuw verbeelden van onze democratieën als tegenkracht tegen de ‘politiek van het verleden’. Bij binnenkomst wordt u verwelkomd met een demonstratie die past bij de plek. Na de lezing gaat host Sophie Stravens met Masha in gesprek. Koop nu je kaarten voor deze onvergetelijke avond.
De speech– Kan wat er in Amerika gebeurde, ook hier gebeuren? We moeten aannemen van wel. Europa staat op spanning. In Hongarije heeft een autoritaire leider de media en staat in zijn macht, in Polen staat de scheiding der machten op het spel en in Frankrijk en Italië spreken de populistische stemmen telkens weer mee. Het is wachten op een ongeluk. De politiek van het verlangen naar een ‘land van ooit’, een denkbeeldig verleden, heeft Europa en het Westen in zijn greep.
Masha Gessen zet daar de toekomst tegenover. In diens boeken over Putin verweet Gessen hem dat hij de Russische toekomst tot geschiedenis maakte. Twee dagen na Trump’s enige verkiezing tot president van de Verenigde Staten, bood Gessen zes regels aan “om in een autocratie te overleven en je geestelijke gezondheid en zelf-respect te redden”. De zesde regel luidt: Herinner je de toekomst. Gessen zal laten zien hoe we tot een heruitvinding van onze democratie kunnen, nee, móeten komen en hoe we de politiek van het verleden kunnen vervangen door een politiek van de toekomst.
Over Masha Gessen
Masha Gessen (1967, hen/hun) is een van oorsprong Russische journalist en auteur die nu in ballingschap leeft in de Verenigde Staten. Tot 2013 stond Gessen in de frontlinie van de harde strijd om grondrechten voor homoseksuelen in Rusland. Daarna vluchtte hen onder dreiging van Russische politici om kinderen weg te halen bij homoseksuele gezinnen, waarbij Gessen en diens gezin expliciet werden genoemd. Inmiddels is Gessen een bekroond denker en schrijver over hoe democratieën stapsgewijs worden ontmanteld.
Masha Gessen is auteur van de boeken The Future is History: How Totalitarianism Reclaimed Russia (2017 National Book Award), How to survive Autocracy (2020) en is een vast columnist voor The New Yorker.

De voormalige Kaaihallen op de Tramkade zijn in het afgelopen jaar omgebouwd tot het World Skate Center. Shift Talks heeft de eer om voor het eerst van deze bijzondere hal gebruik te mogen maken voor zo’n groot event. Met 400 stoelen op de skatebaan: een unicum op een bijzondere, rauwe plek voor een rauwe boodschap.

Na de lezing verplaatsen we ons voor een drankje, muziek en de signeersessie met Masha Gessen zelf (!) naar de Bossche Brouwers! Boeken zijn te koop bij de signeertafel, door Boekhandel Adr. Heinen. Masha zal vanaf ongeveer 21.40 starten met signeren.

Shift Talks Festival 2022
Hoe handelen we nu de democratie wereldwijd onder druk staat? Wij zelf, onze leiders, de media? Deze vraag staat centraal tijdens Shift Talks Festival 2022. In de dagen rondom Masha Gessen’s keynote speech denken gasten zoals Bas Heijne, Foeke Postma (Bellingcat), Tommy Wieringa, Daan Roovers en anderen door op diens ideeën in diverse talks en discussies. Daarnaast maakt Shift Talks het thema beleefbaar met (foto)tentoonstellingen en podcasts. Shift Talks is een festival van Huis73 en wordt mede mogelijk gemaakt door vfonds. Het festival vindt plaats van 17 t/m 26 november in ’s-Hertogenbosch. Het programma wordt constant aangevuld met nieuwe namen en programma’s.

The subject: re-imagining our democracies as a counter-force to the ‘politics of the past’. Upon entering you will be welcomed with a demonstration appropriate for the venue. The Speech – Can what happened in the United States also happen here? We have to assume it can. Something is afoot in Europe after all. In Hungary, an authoritarian leader controls the media and the state, in Poland the separation of powers is at stake and in France and Italy populists have edged closer to power than ever. Accidents are bound to happen. The politics of longing for an imaginary past has taken hold of Europe and the West.
Masha Gessen challenges this development by re-introducing the future. In their books about Putin, Gessen investigates how Putin turned the Russian post-1989 orientation towards the future into an ideology around restoring Russia’s past. Two days after Trump’s only election as president of the United States, Gessen introduced six rules “for surviving in an autocracy and salvaging your sanity and self-respect.” The sixth rule is: remember the future. Gessen will show how we can, no, must come to a reinvention of our democracy and how we can replace the politics of the past with a politics of the future.
About Masha Gessen
Masha Gessen (1967, they/them) is a Russian journalist and author who now lives in exile in the United States. Until 2013, Gessen was also a key activist in the fight for civil rights for homosexuals in Russia. In 2013 however, Russian politicians began to threaten the gay community with taking away children from gay families. In these threats, Gessen and their family were explicitly mentioned as an example. They and their family had to flee Putin’s regime. By now, Gessen has become an award-winning thought-leader and author on how democracies are gradually being dismantled.
Masha Gessen is the author of the books The Future is History: How Totalitarianism Reclaimed Russia (2017 National Book Award), How to Survive Autocracy (2020) and is a regular author for The New Yorker.
